white wine

Hooray for Chardonnay!

We’ve heard on the grapevine that 25th May 2017 is International Chardonnay Day.

It occurred to us that it seems a shame to celebrate this fantastic grape for only 1 day. So we’ve decided to save celebrate all month with 10% off our Jackson Estate Shelter Belt Chardonnay!

The Jackson Estate vineyards sit on on the Wairau River plains in Marlborough and have been producing fine wines for over 25 years.

The Jackson Estate Shelter Belt Chardonnay is derived from a large shelterbelt of trees which separate the grounds of the Jackson Estate homestead from the vineyard.

This fantastic wine has notes of fresh citrus, lime, fig and faint spice notes which combine with the complex notes of oyster shell and lees driven aromatics.

So, with 10% off until 31/5/17, why not give our Shelter Belt Chardonnay a try this month!

Give a better bottle this Christmas!

Ever since the wise men gave Jesus a bottle of Frankincense, the giving of a bottle of something lovely at Christmas can make the perfect gift.

Introducing Our Wines Of The Month

Introducing Our New Wines of the Month

May is here (albeit with a rather wetter introduction than we might have liked) but at last, we can introduce you to this month’s – Wines of the Month.

This month we’re offering something a little special. Not only do we have 3 brand new Italian wines to introduce you to but these gems all attract a 10% discount throughout May. Salute!

Mionetto Prosecco Treviso DOC Extra Dry

MionettoProseccoTrevisoDOCTwitter

For 125 years Mionetto in Valdobbiadene has been perfecting production of Prosecco. Established in 1887 by the master winemaker Francesco Mionetto, the Mionetto winery has become a flagship for the area and a shining example of Prosecco production on the international scene. Passion, tradition, research and excellence are the fundamental values of this winery.

The grapes are grown on the picturesque, sloping hills just north of Treviso in the Veneto region of Italy.

This prosecco has a straw yellow colour with hints of citrus fruits. It is a well-balanced wine with pleasant acidity, lively bubbles and a fresh and dry finish.

Perfect as an aperitif and for celebrations of every kind.

Available from us here.

Mario Giribaldi Barbaresco 2006 DOCG

GiribaldiBarberesco2006-Twitter

Agricola Mario Giribaldi was founded in 1920 in the very heart of Piedmont, Northern Italy. Now a third generation family run winery, the great passion used in production is evident in the quality of the wines.

Barbaresco ages for at least a year in oak and at least one year in the bottle to meet stringent DOCG standards. The Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) classification is the highest classification for Italian wines, denoting controlled production methods and guaranteeing quality.

This wine is smooth and elegant. Ruby red with sweet hints of cherries and red fruits mixed with subtle spice. A medium body with balanced tannins and plenty of acidity.

Pairs well with pastas and red meat dishes.

Available from us here.

Cantine Di Monserrato Vermentino Di Sardegna DOC

Monserrato Vermentino Di Sardegna Twitter

Cantina Sociale Di Monserrato was founded in 1924 in the rugged mountainous landscape of Sardinia. As the second largest island in the Mediterranean and an autonomous region of Italy, Sardinia lies off Italy’s west coast. It boasts many wine varietals that are less common than on mainland Italy.

Over the last nine decades successive generations of wine makers in Cantine Di Monserrato have worked hard to enrich their wines with the passion and experience evident in their labours.

Vermentino is a very important grape in Sardinia, constituting the Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) appellation; Vermentino Di Sardegna. This wine has aromas of peach and zesty citrus fruits and a hint of minerality.

Pale straw coloured with refreshingly crisp acidity it is perfect with seafood, game and mature cheeses.

Available from us here.

Happy May everyone!

Restaurant-Quality Wines You Can Enjoy At Home

We’ve all been to a fantastic restaurant, soaked up the ambience, devoured delicious food and discovered a fantastic new wine. The whole process is a love affair for the senses but the cost of this treat is increasing.

Pubs now regularly charge the same as their Restaurant counterparts. The Lonely Planet Guide advises that a three-course dinner with wine in a top restaurant in London will cost somewhere between £60-£90 per person.

So it’s not surprising that ‘staying in’ is the new ‘dining out’. No need to dress up (unless of course you wish to), no trekking through the rain only to find your chosen spot fully booked and with a 2 hour wait to be served and no need for a taxi home.

And the options for food are increasing too. Many takeaways now offer gourmet or healthy options. The lovely people at Cook! have designed a whole range of really remarkable food for your freezer (http://www.cookfood.net). Failing that, you can always cook your own gastronomic feast. Even if you’re not set to be the next Marco Pierre White, you can put your trust in Mary Berry’s new series of foolproof recipes (see BBC2, Mondays 8.30pm, 25th January to 29th February).

But what about the wine? That’s a more challenging issue. Yes, of course you could pop to the nearest supermarket and grab the bottle with the most appealing label. You could even approach the issue with a preferential grape or style in mind, but are you really buying a restaurant quality wine? Top restaurants pay handsomely to secure the services of expertly trained sommeliers to ensure their wine lists match the quality of the food they offer. Sadly even the best takeaways, prepared meals and home cooked offerings don’t come with a wine list.

Which is where we come in. At Charles Rose Wines we work hard with our suppliers to find restaurant quality wines at the best price and then deliver them straight to your door. Many of our fabulous wines appear on wine lists in the very best restaurants – don’t believe us – check out the lists below.

The advantage is that you don’t pay to cover the overheads, staffing and wear and tear costs associated with running a restaurant. You simply pay for the wine and delivery and leave the rest to us.

So why not enjoy a restaurant quality bottle of wine delivered straight to your door at a fraction of the price.

Deutz Champagne Brut and Rose:

Mionetto Sergio Rose Prosecco: The Oat Hill

Last Delivery Dates for Christmas 2015

We know Christmas is a whole 16 sleeps away but we would hate for people to miss out on one of our fabulous wines or ports as a Christmas gift due to delivery issues.

If you’d like to send something special then please place your order before 6pm on Friday the 18th of December. We will make sure your order goes out for delivery first thing on Saturday the 19th.

After that it’s in the hands of the couriers. Obviously parcel delivery companies are under extra pressure around Christmas. Our couriers will endeavour to deliver your gift in time but can’t guarantee it. So we hope you won’t wait until the 18th!

Now that’s the information delivered – we’ll toast to that!

Christmas Drinks Guide

When it comes to Christmas Day, while the turkey is usually the star of the show, we think the wine should get top billing. So here’s our guide to wine pairings for Christmas lunch.

Aperitif

Whether you choose to enjoy while opening gifts or when guests arrive, nothing sets the tone for a fabulous lunch better than a glass of champagne. So let the corks pop, the bubbles flow and the good times roll with our Deutz Brut Classic Champagne.

Alternatively, if you fancy offering guests something a bit different our Forest Gin and Gonzalez Byass 12 Anos Palo Cortado Sherry are bound to delight, while not over filling hungry tums.

The Main Event

Turkey

Turkey is a medium-weight poultry with a delicate flavour, so it’s important not to over power the turkey with the wine. For red wines, go for lighter wines, such as Pinot Noir, while a slightly fuller bodied white wine such a Chardonnay will also work well.

We recommend our Undurraga Sibaris Reserva Especial Pinot Noir 2013 and Jackson Estate Shelter Belt Chardonnay 2011.

Roast Beef

BodegasBeroniaReserva2010-2000x2000

If you’ve opted for a rich, rib of beef then our Beronia Reserva 2010 DOCa Rioja works a treat.

Venison

Montepulciano

Venison is a rich, lean gamey meat which works well with medium-bodied red wines. Our Cantina Zaccagnini Tralcetto Montepulciano D’Abruzzo 2013 is a perfect pick.

Salmon

Chardonnay is an obvious pick for Salmon (see our Jackson Estate Shelter Belt Chardonnay 2011) but our Cantina Campagnola Bardolino Chiaretto Classico 2013 is an excellent rose alternative.

Digestif

Noval Silval 2005

Quite simply, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a Port. Our Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage Port is exquisite and the perfect way to round off a wonderful Christmas.

Cheers!

This Season It’s All About The Accessories!

As the party season gets into full swing, we know that it’s all about the accessories. We’re not talking bags and sparkly shoes – we’re talking decanters, stoppers and openers!

From our luxury, silver plated drip catcher to our lead crystal decanters we have all the accessories to make this season pop.

Silver Plated Drip Catcher

When the Christmas table is set, nothing spoils the scene more than wine stains on your linen. Helpfully, our luxury, silver plated drip catcher ensures your bottle looks fantastic, while also protecting your table and linens. The catcher is compatible with most standard wine bottles and the luxury red felt inner is the perfect seasonal adornment for your favourite bottle.

Deluxe Wing Corkscrew

BarcraftConnoisseurWingCorkscrew-2000x2000

This classic style, double-handled heavy duty wing corkscrew, with a mirror polished finish and a comfortable curved top handle is perfect for opening all types of cork bottle tops. The corkscrew is of a single cast design, so no broken toys on christmas day. This corkscrew is used in professional bars, so why not take the party home.

Silver Plated Wine Bottle Stopper

While we find it hard to leave a bottle of our fantastic wine unfinished, on the odd occasion when it happens, this stopper is the perfect solution. Not only does the rubber seal maintain the wine’s freshness, but the silver plated top is pure luxury.

Silver Plated Champagne Bottle Opener

While there are many ways to open a Champagne bottle, using this beautiful opener is certainly easier than attempting sabrage and has the advantage of avoiding flying corks a waste of good champagne spray!

Our Crystal Decanters (Square and Fluted)

The piece de resistance! Our beautiful 24% lead crystal decanters are the perfect addition to any drinks cabinet and make a wonderful gift for lovers of fine drinks.

We strongly suspect it’s going to be a very merry Christmas!
